Testosterone is thought to contribute to the maintenance of muscle mass in males; therefore, we investigated the effect of 28 days of testosterone depletion on muscle mass in male mice at multiple ages across the lifespan. This binding plays an important role in regulating the transport, tissue delivery, bioactivity, and metabolism of testosterone. Only the free amount of testosterone can bind to an androgenic receptor, which means it has biological activity. Specific proteins include sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which binds testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol, and other sex steroids.
